Abstract
This study examines the impact of social media on the communication patterns and
behaviors of youths in Ilorin metropolis. Using a survey research methodology, the study
collected data from a sample of youths and analyzed their perceptions of social media
usage. The findings reveal that the majority of respondents are exposed to social media
and use it regularly, with 71.1% agreeing that social media has a positive impact on youth
communication. The study also found that social media has changed the way youths
communicate, with many reporting increased access to information and enhanced
connectivity. However, the study notes that excessive social media usage can have
negative consequences, including decreased face-to-face interaction and potential impacts
on mental health. The study concludes that social media platforms have become integral
to the daily lives of young people, offering both benefits and drawbacks that need to be
acknowledged and addressed.
