Abstract
This study examined the motivational strategies that enhance adult participation in community development programmes within Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. The research was driven by the need to address the low involvement of adults in developmental activities despite their crucial role in sustaining community growth. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were collected from 530 respondents selected through a multi-stage proportionate sampling technique across various community-based organizations. A structured questionnaire titled Questionnaire on Motivational Strategies for Citizens’ Participation in Community Development Activities in Gokana LGA (QMICPCDA) served as the main instrument for data collection, with a reliability coefficient of 0.85.
Findings revealed that decentralization of power, effective leadership, identification of community needs, respect for cultural values, adequate funding, and efficient communication strategies significantly influence adult participation in community development programmes. Results showed that when adults are empowered, recognized, and involved in decision-making processes, their motivation to participate increases considerably. The study concludes that enhancing adult engagement requires a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic motivational strategies tailored to the socio-cultural context of Gokana. It recommends that government agencies, community leaders, and development organizations strengthen participatory approaches, ensure equitable funding, and respect cultural norms to promote sustained adult involvement in community development initiatives.
