Abstract
Family planning is crucial for enhancing public health, promoting socio-economic growth, and improving the quality of life for families and communities. Despite its numerous benefits, including reducing maternal and infant mortality and preventing unintended pregnancies, the adoption of modern contraceptive methods in Nigeria remains low. Cultural resistance, misinformation, limited access to services, and declining mass media campaigns have contributed to this challenge. This study evaluates the effectiveness of family planning initiatives in Nigeria, with an emphasis on the role of media in raising awareness and influencing adoption. The research focuses on the National Family Planning Campaign Programme in Kwara State, specifically in Offa Local Government Area. It investigates the role of mass media, particularly radio, in creating awareness about family planning. The study examines the knowledge and attitudes of reproductive-age women, the extent of family planning method utilization among couples, and the socio-cultural factors that impact family planning practices. Furthermore, it evaluates the effectiveness of media campaigns in influencing choices and fostering acceptance of family planning methods. Findings from this study aim to offer valuable insights to policymakers, media practitioners, health workers, and guidance counselors.
The Agenda Setting Theory and Social Responsibility Theory provide the theoretical foundation for this study. The Agenda Setting Theory explains how media prioritizes specific topics, influencing public perception and shaping societal priorities. By examining media salience, frequency of reporting, and prominence, the study highlights how media can guide public attitudes and behaviors. The Social Responsibility Theory complements this by emphasizing the ethical duty of the media to provide balanced, accurate, and diverse content while upholding societal values. Through the lens of these theories, the study demonstrates the dual role of media as a shaper of public discourse and a watchdog. The research underscores the critical need for media to fulfill its societal obligations by promoting accountability, fostering public good, and encouraging the adoption of family planning practices. By leveraging media's potential, particularly radio, the study advocates for strategic and culturally sensitive approaches to enhance family planning awareness and acceptance in Kwara State and beyond.
