Abstract
This research work was carried out to determine the antioxidant activities of some
selected fractions of the leaves of moringa oleifera and this was done following various
procedures. The leaves of moringa oleifera was air dried, grinded and extracted
successfully with ethanol. The ethanol extract was fractionated with n-hexane (NH),
dichloromethane (DCM), ethyl acetate (EA) and methanol (MeOH) in order of increasing
polarity to afford thirteen fractions. MOF7-MOF13 were selected for phytochemical
screening. Total antioxidant Capacity (TAC) analysis was carried out on MOF7, MOF9 and
MOF12.
The results obtained indicates the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins,
carbohydrates, steroids, phenolic compounds, glycosides and saponins in all the fractions
but steroid was not detected in MOF8 and MOF9 and glycoside was not detected in MOF7.
The (TAC) of the MOF7, MOF9 and MOF12 fractions indicates increase in activity with
increase in concentration, though lower than that of rutin which was the standard. The
results however, indicate some significant antioxidant activities as depicted by the IC50
values 237.81, 303.24 and 305.98 µg\ml for MOF7, MOF9 and MOF12 respectively. The
results obtained from this research confirm the medicinal use of moringa oleifera in
folkloric medicine.
