Abstract
This study examines the bacteriological composition and antimicrobial susceptibility of bacteria isolated from poultry waste in Iree Town,Osun State, Nigeria. The bacterial load of the poultry waste samples ranged from 0.20×10² to 0.50×10³ CFU/mL,with the highest concentration observed at 10–¹ dilution.Five bacterial isolates were identified: Escherichia coli (24%), Staphylococcus aureus (20%),Enterobacter cloacae (20%), Salmonella enteritidis (16%),and Proteus vulgaris (20%). The isolates exhibited varied morphological and biochemical characteristics, including distinct Gram reactions, shapes, and sugar fermentation abilities aligning with previous reports on the microbial diversity in poultry waste. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests showed that antibiotics such as Ciprofloxacin (32 mm zone of inhibition for staphylococcus aureus) and chloramphenicol (27 mm for E. coli) were most effective, while resistance was noted against Amoxicillin and streptomycin in several isolates. These results suggest the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, likely due to the indiscriminate use of antibiotics in poultry farming. This study authenticate the dual role of poultry waste as a nutrient rich resource and a potential biohazard.Proper waste management practices, routine microbial monitoring, and stricter antibiotic usage policies are recommended to mitigate health risks and environmental contamination. These measures will ensure the sustainable use of poultry waste while protecting public health.
