Factors Associated With Failure of Secondary School Students in Physical Education in Ilorin West Local Government, Ilorin Kwara State

Abstract
This research work examines the factors associated with failure of secondary
schools students in physical education in Ilorin West, Ilorin Kwara State. This research
identified and analysed the primary determinants of such failures, encompassing
student-related factors, parent-related factors, school-related factors, and peer-related
factors. Understanding these factors is crucial for developing targeted interventions
and improving the effectiveness of physical education programs, ultimately fostering
a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students.
The methodology employed a mixed-methods approach, a descriptive statistics
of frequency count and percentages were used to analyze demographic data while a
different statistical test from chi-square was used to test the hypotheses set for the
study at 0.05 alpha level of significance. A descriptive survey design was adopted. The
study population comprised secondary school students from various secondary school
in Ilorin west. A total of 350 respondent were selected using proportionate sampling
technique. A self structured and validated questionnaire was used to data for this study.
Findings indicate that
demographic factors such as family income size r (348) = -0.368, p = .001 family’s
socio-economic status r (348) = -0.216, p = .006, and gender r (348) = 0.216, p = .006
significantly influence physical education performance. Age range, however, showed
no significant relationship, Student-related factors χ² = 36.57, p = .001, Family-related
factors χ² = 16.283, p = .001, School-related factors χ² = 45.41, p = .001, Peer-related
factors χ² = 76.53, p = .001. The findings underscore the need for holistic interventions
that consider these multifaceted influences to foster physical literacy, promote healthy
lifestyles, and enhance overall student well-being and academic success in Physical
Education.
Based on the findings of this research this study highlights how the physical
education performance of secondary school pupils in Ilorin West is shaped by the
intricate interactions of demographic, student, family, school, and peer factors. It is
recommended that stakeholders ensure equitable access to resources and diverse
sporting opportunities for all students, teachers should educate students on healthy
habits and empower them to make informed choices about physical activity for
lifelong well-being.
