Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the incidence and severity of soybean brown spot (Septoria glycines) in Kumbotso Local Government Area, Kano State, during the 2024 rainy season. The research aimed to assess the impact of different cropping patterns on the prevalence of the disease and to identify the causal pathogen responsible for the observed symptoms. The study was conducted across three districts: KunyanTainna, Challawa, and Batakaye, with a total of 27 soybean fields sampled. Disease incidence and severity were measured using visual scoring methods and a modified 1–5 scale. Results revealed that soybean brown spot was widespread across all sampled fields, with higher disease incidence and severity observed in fields that were intercropped with cereals like maize. Fields with poor drainage and inadequate field management practices exhibited the most severe cases of the disease. The findings indicate that Septoria glycines is the primary pathogen responsible for the brown spot observed. Furthermore, the study identified that environmental conditions, including rainfall patterns and temperature fluctuations, contributed to the disease’s development. This research underscores the importance of adopting effective crop management practices, such as proper sanitation and disease-resistant soybean varieties, to mitigate the impact of soybean brown spot. It also emphasizes the need for increased awareness and education among farmers regarding sustainable agricultural practices to reduce the spread of crop diseases in the region.
