Abstract
This study investigates the influence of clothing on social interaction among undergraduate students at the University of Ilorin. Using a descriptive survey design, the research sampled 150 students across four faculties, employing a structured questionnaire (CSIQ) to collect data on five key dimensions: first impressions, social inclusion/exclusion, personal identity, confidence and engagement, and color-induced mood and behavior. Descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests were used for data analysis.Findings revealed statistically significant relationships between clothing and all dimensions of social interaction examined. Clothing was shown to shape first impressions (χ² = 18.72, p < 0.05), contribute to social inclusion and group identity (χ² = 16.35, p < 0.05), reflect psychological variables such as self-esteem and mood (χ² = 21.09, p < 0.05), and influence social judgments and peer interaction (χ² = 14.57, p < 0.05). Additionally, clothing color choices were found to impact students’ emotional states and perceived approachability. These findings affirm that clothing is not merely a tool for physical coverage but a powerful non-verbal medium influencing social dynamics and cultural identity within the university context. The study concludes that students’ clothing choices significantly affect their social experiences, perceptions, and group affiliations. Recommendations include integrating dress awareness into student orientation, promoting culturally inclusive fashion, adopting inclusive dress codes, and offering counseling support for fashion-related self-esteem issues.
