Abstract
Melegueta (Aframomum melegueta), commonly known as Grains of Paradise, is a tropical spice and medicinal plant belonging to the Zingiberaceae family. It is valued for its pungent aroma, therapeutic properties, and nutritional composition. This study explores the botanical characteristics, traditional uses, and scientific significance of Melegueta. The plant’s seeds contain bioactive compounds such as gingerol, paradol, and shogaol, which exhibit antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. The research highlights its role in traditional African medicine, modern pharmacology, and food industries. Findings reveal that Melegueta possesses significant health-promoting potentials, warranting further investigation into its pharmacological and industrial applications.
