Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study assessed the costs and returns on yam production management in Ekiti State, Nigeria.
The research described the socio-economic characteristics of yam producers, estimated the cost
and returns on yam production, and identified the factors influencing profitability and challenges
to yam production. The results showed that yam production and marketing is profitable, with a
significant gross margin and return on investment. The study also found that labourhysa cost,
demand fluctuation, and access to credit are significant factors influencing profitability, while
limited access to credit, climate change, limited government support, high cost of labour, and
lack of extension services are major challenges to yam production. The study recommends
improving access to credit, implementing labour-saving technologies, developing climate-
resilient yam production systems, and establishing extension services and training programs for
yam farmers to address these challenges and enhance the profitability and sustainability of yam
production in the study area.
