Availability and the Use of Community Resources for Teaching and Learning of Economics in Some Selected Secondary Schools in Ondo West Local Government

Abstract
This study is designed to examine Availability and the use of Community Resources for
Teaching and Learning of Economics in some selected Secondary Schools in Ondo West
Local Government Area, Ondo State. There is general introduction which led to rationale of
the study. Four research questions were raised.
Descriptive survey research design was adopted and one hundred (100) respondents was
randomly selected from different secondary schools in the local government area. A self-
structured questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. Descriptive statistics of
frequency counts and percentages were used to analyse the demographic data, while
inferential statistics of mean and standard deviation was also used to analyse the results.
Based on the findings, it was concluded that Economics teachers make use of chat and
graphs while teaching Economics, they always take students to nearest bank while teaching
related topic and they use of local food processing industry as community resources,
Economics teachers make use of packaged water industry in the community. Moreso,
Economics teachers invite community leader to motivate students once in a while, they also
make use of community resources in every lesson, they always make use of instructional
materials in order to stimulate interest of students and find it difficult to make use of
instructional material that meet students needs. Furthermore, Economics teachers make use
of field trip while teaching in order to develop students interest, they organize debate among
students to motivate them, they also assigned students to project work in order to work hand
in hand and they always come to class to explain and write on chalkboard and invite dignity
in community to school while teaching and shortage of fund in the school discourage
Economics teacher to take students out of school for excursion. Moreso, changing of
curriculum time to time discourage teachers to make use of community resources while
teaching and poor maintenance culture of the administrator hinder Economic teacher to
make use of available community resources while teaching.
Based on conclusion, the study recommended that Economics teachers should try as much
as possible to integrate the use of community resources in teaching and learning Economics
contents. This will improve the quality of instruction given in schools and also ensure the
use of student centred approach in teaching; School authority particularly school
administration should encourage teachers to use community resources through financial
support, appropriate scheduling of standard timetable and organisation of regular student
development programme to promote teachers efficiency and Ministry of education through
inspectorate division should continually organise seminars and workshops for in servicing
Economics teachers on importance and professional use of wide variety of community
resources to facilitate teaching and learning
