Abstract
This study examines the Igbo Apprenticeship System (IAS) and its effect on economic development. IAS is a traditional Nigerian economic empowerment and skill development model in Igbo communities. The data analysis includes descriptive statistics, chi-square tests. The research evaluates IAS’s role in fostering business growth, income enhancement, and social mobility. Data from southeastern Nigerian business owners and former apprentices highlight IAS's positive impact on local economies through entrepreneurship and job creation. Challenges identified include limited formalization, gender disparities, and declining youth interest. Recommendations include formalizing IAS training, adopting modern technology, promoting gender inclusivity, and raising awareness to sustain IAS’s relevance in a global economy. Key findings reveal that 94.2% of IAS participants experienced business growth, suggesting the system’s effectiveness in fostering entrepreneurship. Furthermore, apprenticeships were positively associated with increased income, Social Status Improvement, and community contributions, particularly through mentorship and job creation. This study underscores IAS’s importance for social cohesion and sustainable development, calling for strategic efforts to preserve and modernize this cultural tradition.
