Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study aimed to identify the economic, health, and social challenges faced by cobblers in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, particularly as they age. Additionally, it examined the roles of community support and social recognition in promoting graceful aging among this group. The ultimate goal was to inform policy interventions that could improve the quality of life and socioeconomic well-being of cobblers. The research aims to identify these challenges, evaluate current policies, and propose strategies for improvement.
A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data from thirty cobblers in Ile-Ife. The study adopts a descriptive research design, particularly focusing on challenges faced by ageing cobblers in Ile-Ife. Primary data was collected through the use of structured questionnaire and interviews designed to capture both quantitative and qualitative data.
The research revealed significant issues, including inadequate access to healthcare, financial insecurity, poor working conditions, and a lack of retirement planning. Social challenges, such as limited community support and low social recognition, were also identified as barriers to graceful aging. Despite their vital contribution to the local economy, cobblers remained marginalized, lacking the necessary resources and recognition to ensure their well-being.
In conclusion, to enhance the quality of life and promote graceful aging among cobblers, the study recommended targeted interventions, including vocational training, microfinance opportunities, and the establishment of community support programs. These strategies would address immediate economic and health needs while fostering social inclusion and long-term sustainability. The findings underscored the need for a holistic policy framework tailored to the informal sector, paving the way for further research into similar industries and settings.
