Abstract
This study investigated the phytochemical composition, antibacterial, and antifungal activities of
methanolic and hexane extracts of African Peach leaf (Sarcocepha luslatifolius) against Escherichia
coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. The phytochemical analysis revealed the
presence of saponins, tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, and glycosides in both extracts, while
steroids were absent. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated using the agar well diffusion method, with
methanol extract demonstrating superior efficacy, exhibiting inhibition zones of 2.4 mm, 2.1 mm, and
1.6 mm against S. aureus, E. coli, and C. albicans, respectively, at 100 mg/ml concentration. The
minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were 50 mg/ml for methanol extract and 75 mg/ml
for hexane extract across all tested microorganisms. These findings validate the traditional use of S.
latifolius and highlight its potential as a source of natural antimicrobial agents. The study
recommends further isolation of bioactive compounds, in vivo testing, and clinical trials to explore
its therapeutic applications
