Abstract
Abstract
Groundwater serves as a crucial source of drinking water for residents of Maiduguri Metropolitan, yet its quality is increasingly threatened by uncontrolled solid waste disposal. This study assessed the impact of dumpsites on groundwater quality in selected areas of Maiduguri, specifically along Damboa Road and Gwange. Five borehole water samples were collected from locations both proximal and distal to active dumpsites and analyzed for physicochemical and microbial parameters following World Health Organization (WHO) standards. Parameters assessed included pH, turbidity, color, temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS), electrical conductivity, hardness, iron, manganese, fluoride, and microbial content. Results revealed that while most parameters—including turbidity, pH, TDS, hardness, and metal concentrations—fell within WHO permissible limits, color levels exceeded the standard (5 PtCo) at all polluted sites, indicating the presence of organic and industrial contaminants. Microbial analysis showed traces of total coliforms (1–2 cfu/100 mL), suggesting mild contamination, though E. coli and Salmonella were absent. Correlation analysis indicated significant relationships between color, turbidity, and TDS, highlighting pollution influence on water clarity and ionic composition. The study concludes that groundwater in the study areas remains largely suitable for domestic use, but localized contamination near dumpsites poses potential health risks if unmanaged. It recommends improved solid waste management practices, periodic water quality monitoring, and public awareness on safe waste disposal to ensure sustainable groundwater protection in Maiduguri Metropolitan.
