Abstract
This research work examines the impact of misapplication of khitbah on marital instability
in Ilorin, Kwara state. In shariah, khitbah is intended to serve as a prelude to marriage
fostering compatibility, transparency and morality. However, this research work finds that
contemporary practices in a muslim community like Ilorin, Kwara state often deviate from
these principles which leads to emotional disconnection, unrealistic expectations and weak
marital foundations. Using both the doctrinal and empirical research methods, data was
collected through online questionnaires which was distributed among Ilorin residents. The
findings reveal that while the awareness of khitbah is high, there is no proper understanding
and application of its rules. This study then concludes with a firm recommendation that
adherence to khitbah practices, increased community education, greater involvement of
parents, and guardians in the engagement process, and structured premarital counselling
contributes greatly to marital instability.
