Abstract
ABSTRACT
The purpose of the study was to examine personal factors and premarital sex
among undergraduate students of the University of Calabar, Cross River State. To
achieve the purpose of this study, three null hypotheses were formulated and
tested at 0.05 level of significance. A review of relevant literature was carried out
in accordance with the variables of the study. Survey research design was
considered as the most suitable for the study. Stratified random sampling
technique was adopted to select the five faculties and ten departments while
systematic random sampling technique was adopted to select the three hundred
and four (304) respondents used for the study. A questionnaire was the
instrument employed for data collection. The instrument was vetted by relevant
authorities to ensure its validity. For the purpose of testing the hypotheses
formulated for the study, Pearson product moment correlation and independent ttest statistical tools were utilized for analysis of data. The results that were
obtained from analysis of data and testing of hypotheses in the study revealed that
there was a significant relationship between knowledge of sex education and
premarital sex. The finding further revealed that there was a significant influence
of age and gender on premarital sex among undergraduate students of the
University of Calabar. Based on these findings it was partly recommended that
reproductive health educators should continue to expand their scope in order to
sensitize more undergraduates on the dangers of premarital sex, so as to prevent
the incidence of premarital sex among students
