Solcial Media Utilization and Sexual Behaviour of Undergraduates of the University of Uyo

Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate the utilization of social media on the sexual behaviour of undergraduates in University of Uyo. The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of social media utilization (Facebook and WhatsApp) on the sexual behaviour of undergraduate students in University of Uyo. The research design for this study was the mixed methods approach which was combined with quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the topic “Social media utilization and sexual behaviour of undergraduate of the University of Uyo”. Three research questions and three research hypotheses were formulated to guide and direct the study. The population for the study comprised 2500 admitted undergraduates in the Faculty of Education, University of Uyo, Uyo. The instrument used for data collection was structured and unstructured questionnaire designed by the researcher titled “Social Media Utilization and Sexual Behaviours of Undergraduates Questionnaire (SOCMEDUSEBQ)” which resulted to the reliability co-efficient of 0.95. Data collected in this study were analyzed using mean and standard deviation while t-test statistics was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Results revealed that, there is a significant difference in the utilization of social media (Facebook and Whatsapp) by undergraduates on their sexual behaviour. It was therefore, recommended amongst others that more mental health supports should be made available to individuals or undergraduates who have been impacted by social media utilization to sexual content, examine how individual characteristics such as age, gender, and educational level play a part in the relationship between utilization of facebook and whatsapp platform to sexual content and its effects.
