Abstract
This project titled “Factors Affecting Teaching and Learning English Language in Senior Secondary Schools” investigates the factors affecting the teaching and learning of English language in senior secondary schools within Gwagwalada Area Council. The study is motivated from understanding the reason students understanding English Language. The theoretical framework used is the John Dewey’s Theory of Learning. Specifically, it examines challenges impacting teachers and students, the role of school administration, and the effects of resource availability on English language instruction. Using a descriptive survey design, data was gathered from 128 Senior Secondary School II (SS2) students through a structured questionnaire, "Factors Affecting Teaching and Learning English Language (FATELEL)." Key findings indicate that inadequate professional development, limited teaching resources, large class sizes, and lack of exposure to English outside the classroom significantly hinder effective English language learning. Complex grammar and vocabulary further challenge students' comprehension, while insufficient administrative support affects teachers' instructional effectiveness. Recommendations include continuous teacher training, resource enhancement, class size reduction, and the integration of technology. Engaging communities and creating English language clubs were also suggested to increase students' exposure and proficiency. This study contributes to the understanding of educational obstacles and strategies for improving English language learning outcomes in secondary schools.
