Abstract
This study examines the causes and consequences of divorce in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria. The research investigates the social, economic, cultural, and psychological factors that contribute to the increasing rate of marital dissolution in the area. Using a descriptive survey design, data were collected from married and divorced individuals through structured questionnaires and interviews. The findings reveal that major causes of divorce include infidelity, lack of communication, financial problems, domestic violence, infertility, and interference from extended family members. The consequences of divorce were found to be far-reaching, affecting not only the couples but also their children and the larger community. These include emotional trauma, financial hardship, social stigma, poor academic performance among children, and decline in moral values. The study concludes that effective premarital counseling, public enlightenment on marital responsibilities, and conflict resolution programs are essential to reducing the incidence of divorce in Ado-Ekiti. It recommends that both religious and governmental institutions should play active roles in promoting stable family life to ensure social harmony and community development.
