Strategies for Preventing Cyberbullying Among Undergraduates in Ilorin Metropolis

Abstract
The act of cyberbullying is very rampant among undergraduate students especially universities students; it is a situation whereby the strong oppress the weak. This study investigated the strategies for preventing cyberbullying among undergraduates in Ilorin metropolis. The influence of the moderating variables of gender, religion, school type, academic level, place of residence was selected.
A descriptive survey of the correlation type of research design was used in carrying out this study. The population for this study consisted of selected undergraduate students in Ilorin metropolis. A sample size of two hundred (200) participants were selected using the proportional and simple random sample technique. The research instrument used was a self-designed questionnaire titled “Strategies for Preventing Cyberbullying among Undergraduates Questionnaire(SPCQ)”. A research question was answered while five null hypotheses were formulated and tested for the study. The data obtained for the study were analyzed using percentages and mea scores. The hypotheses formulated were tested using t-test and analysis of variance(ANOVA) at 0.05 level of significance.
The study revealed that online tools should be used to report instances of Cyberbullying, Parents/Guardian should play active role in supporting their wards in preventing Cyberbullying, universities can implement measures to educate students about the impact of Cyberbullying are the most common strategies for preventing cyberbullying among undergraduate in Ilorin metropolis. It was revealed that there was no significant difference in the strategies for preventing cyberbullying among undergraduate based on gender. Also, this study revealed that there was a significant difference in the strategies for preventing cyberbullying among undergraduates in Ilorin metropolis based on religion, school type, academic level, and place of residence.
Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended that counsellors, lecturers and parents should always caution of cyberbullying activities among students and stand against any forms of cyberbullying they may notice among them. It was also recommended that parents should monitor cyberbullying activities among their children/wards and encourage them not to engage in activities that can harm others.
