Abstract
This study investigates the proximate composition, vitamin content (Vitamin A and C), and mineral
profile of three commercially available canned tomato paste brands Sonia, Ric-Giko, and La-mama in
comparison with World Health Organization (W.H.O) and National Agency for Food and Drugs
Administration and Control (NAFDAC) standards. Standard analytical techniques were employed to
assess moisture, ash, crude fibre, crude protein, crude fat, and carbohydrate content. Results indicate
all brands meet W.H.O. proximate composition guidelines, with La-mama showing the highest crude
protein (1.9%) and vitamin concentrations (Vitamin A = 24.48mg/mL and Vitamin C = 31.85mg/mL),
while Sonia exhibited superior mineral richness, particularly in iron, potassium, and calcium.
Spectrophotometric analysis revealed variations in Vitamin C and A levels, with La-mama consistently
recording the highest concentrations (31.85 mg/ml and 24.48 mg/ml respectively). Mineral analysis
using Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) to identified essential macro elements (K, Ca,
and Mg) and microelements (Fe, and Cu), as well as trace elements such as (Mn, Co, Ni, Rb, Cr, Pb,
and Al) within generally acceptable limits according to W.H.O and NAFDAC. However, the presence
of potentially harmful trace elements underscores the need for stringent quality control in packaging
and manufacturing. This comparative analysis provides valuable insights into the nutritional and safety
profile of canned tomato paste, supporting informed consumer choices and regulatory oversight.
