Abstract
Okop Umehe cultural group is one of many cultural groups in Annang Community. It is domiciled in Ikot Imoh, in Abak Local Government of Akwa Ibom State. Like many other traditional music groups, this group and their musical practices, including their songs, are little known beyond the enclave of Ikot Imoh village. This obscurity raises a major concern bordering on possible extinction of the group and their songs. This unwanted possible eventuality gives rise to this study, which seeks to undertake an ethnomusicological study of the Okop Umehe group, transcribe and document their songs for posterity. The researcher hopes to achieve these objectives by employing the Historical and Descriptive research methods. Data is gleaned from Journal articles, internet sources, direct interviews and participation. Findings show that Okop Umehe songs have not been documented or transcribed, while the group is almost becoming extinct. This is primarily due to non-challant attitude of younger generation to actively enroll as members. It is recommended that other musical groups in Annang communities should undergo such studies in order to preserve in print the rich cultural heritage of Annang people. This effort will help to preserve their music and cultural heritage for future generations, ensuring that these traditions do not vanish due to lack of recorded information. More importantly, there should be initiatives aimed at encouraging the participation of the younger generation in the activities of traditional music groups. This can be achieved through educational programs, workshops, and community events that highlight the importance of cultural heritage and foster a sense of pride and ownership among young people, thus preventing the extinction of these cultural practices.
