Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the implications of artificial intelligence on digital journalism. The
researcher embarked on this study with the intent of achieving four objectives;and based on
these objectives, four research questions were formulated to serve as a guide for this study.
The study was hinged on the media richness theory and the technological determinism theory.
The survey rescarch design was adopted for this study, and data were collected through the
use of questionnaire.Findings from the study revcal that that majority of the respondents are
highly aware and have an indepth understanding of Al journalism tools, and that one factor
influencing the awareness and understanding of Al journalism tools is access to information
and resources.Journalists who work for well-funded media outlets or organizations with a
forward-thinking approach to technology are more likely to have access to training and
resources related to Al journalism tools. On the other hand, journalists working for smaller or
less technologically advanced media organizations may have limited exposure to these tools.
The study also revealed that majority of the respondents have a negative perception towards
Al journalism tools. This is due to the fact that there is apprehension about job displacement
and the automation of certain journalistic tasks.Al journalism tools, such as automated
content generation algorithms, have the potential to streamline news production proccsses by
generating articles, reports,or summaries based on data inputs. However, journalists may fear
that this automation could lead to a reduction in employment opportunities or the devaluation
of their expertise and creativity.Based on the findings of this study,it was recommended that
media organizations should implement comprehensive education and training programmes to
enhance journalists'understanding and awareness,of Al journalism tools. These programmes
should cover the principles, applications, and ethical considerations of Al in journalism,
equipping journalists with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively integrate Al tools
into their reporting practices.
