Comparative Study in Urban and Rural Students Performance in Biology in Senior Secondary Certificate Examination in Idemili North Local Government Area

Abstract
This research was carried out to compare urban and rural senior secondary biology students’ academic achievements in Biology in Idemili North L.G.A. of ANambra State. Two research questions guided the study and the research design adopted for the study was ex-post facts. The population of the study was all the Biology candidates numbering 5210 (five thousand two hundred and ten) that set for the West African Senior Certificates Examination (W.A.S.S.C.E) from 2019 to 2021 in the 16 public secondary schools in the area of study. The sample size was 1993 from the four (4) sampled secondary schools which were selected using simple random techniques. The instruments used for gathering the results have already been standardized by West African Senior School Certificate Examination Board. The collected data were analyzed in Statistical Packages for the Social sciences (SPSS) using the mean and standard deviation. T-test statistics was used to test the research hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. From the analysis, the study revealed that there was significant difference in the academic achievement in SSCE biology between urban and rural students. Based on the findings, conclusion was made. It was also recommended among others that government should ensure even distribution of science resources equipment and materials for teaching and learning of biology.
