Roles of Communication in Conflict Management and Resolution in Tertiary Institutions: a Case Study of Students and Management in Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria

Abstract
This study explores the roles of communication in conflict management and resolution within
tertiary institutions, focusing on the case of students and management at Ekiti State University,
Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria. The broad objective of this study is to examine the role of
communication in the resolution of conflict, in tertiary institutions, with specific focus on, Ekiti
State University, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria. The specific objectives are to examine the
causes and dynamics of conflict, between students and management in Ekiti State University,
Ado-Ekiti; investigate the effectiveness of conflict management strategies adopted in Ekiti State
University, Ado-Ekiti; examine the mode of communication utilized, and its effectiveness in
resolving the conflict in Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti; and proffer recommendations, on
effective means of conflict resolution, in Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti and tertiary
institutions in Nigeria in general. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining
qualitative and quantitative data collection through surveys, interviews, and focus group
discussions with students, faculty members, and administrative staff. The study adopted
Intergroup Contact Theory as a theoretical framework. The findings reveal that communication
plays a critical role in the successful management and resolution of conflicts within the
university setting. Positive communication practices, such as open dialogue, active listening, and
the use of mediation, were found to enhance mutual understanding and contribute to conflict
resolution. Conversely, poor communication, marked by misinterpretation and lack of
transparency, exacerbates tensions and prolongs conflict. The study further identifies key
challenges in communication, including hierarchical barriers and limited access to conflict
resolution resources. Based on these findings, the study recommends the establishment of
structured communication channels, the training of both students and management in conflict
resolution skills, and the promotion of a participatory approach to decision-making in order to
foster a peaceful and collaborative academic environment. This research contributes to the
