Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examined the economic potential of agri-tourism in Awka South Local Government Area (LGA) of Anambra State, Nigeria. It aimed to assess the socio-economic characteristics of operators, identify major agri-tourism locations, evaluate economic impacts, and highlight challenges and factors influencing growth. Using purposive random sampling, ninety respondents from six agri-tourism communities were interviewed through structured questionnaires. Results showed that most operators were male, older, and married traders with diverse educational backgrounds. Amawbia emerged as the main agri-tourism hub, offering activities such as farm stays and agricultural workshops. The findings revealed that agri-tourism significantly boosts local economies by generating employment and increasing farmers’ income, though poor infrastructure and inadequate funding remain major obstacles. Regression analysis indicated that age and education positively influenced profitability, while larger household sizes reduced it. Although its direct effect on income was limited, agri-tourism holds strong potential for rural development. The study recommends improving infrastructure, raising public awareness, simplifying regulations, and providing financial and capacity-building support for operators. It also emphasizes the importance of community involvement and public-private partnerships in promoting sustainable agri-tourism development in the region
