Abstract
The development of pressure ulcer is a common problem across a full range of
healthcare settings. Nurses' knowledge and attitude towards pressure ulcer
prevention and treatment has an important influence on their ability to deliver this
practice. The objective of this study was to assess the knowledge and attitude
towards prevention and treatment of pressure ulcer among nurses in Irrua Specialist
Teaching Hospital, Irrua, Edo State. A descriptive cross-sectional study was
conducted in Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua. Data were collected from
265 nurses by means of a self-administered questionnaire. Respondents were selected
using stratified random sampling technique. Data was analysed with descriptive
statistics. Findings revealed that the nurses had good knowledge on prevention and
treatment of pressure ulcer. Majority (81.1%) of the respondents had adequate
knowledge of pressure ulcer prevention and treatment. Likewise, majority of the
nurses (75.9%) had positive attitudes towards the treatment and prevention of
pressure ulcer.. In conclusion, the results showed that the nurses had good
knowledge and also demonstrated positive attitudes towards the prevention and
treatment of pressure ulcer. The researcher therefore recommended that positive
attitudes should be supported since nurses with a positive attitude will be more
willing to implement pressure ulcer prevention measures. Any barriers which exist to
prevent nurses who have a positive attitude from delivering the prevention strategies
should be investigated.
