Abstract
ABSTRACT
Community journalism plays a crucial role in bridging the information gap between rural communities and mainstream media. It serves as a platform for highlighting local issues, promoting civic engagement, and fostering development. However, rural reporting in Nigeria faces several challenges that hinder its effectiveness. This study examines the role of community journalism in rural reporting and the difficulties faced by journalists covering rural areas. Using a qualitative research approach, data were collected through interviews with community journalists, rural residents, and media professionals. The findings reveal that inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, lack of access to modern communication tools, and security threats are major obstacles to effective rural reporting. Additionally, journalists often struggle with limited training opportunities and interference from political and traditional leaders, which affects the objectivity and credibility of their reports. Despite these challenges, community journalism remains essential in amplifying rural voices, advocating for social change, and addressing developmental issues. The study concludes that improving rural reporting in Nigeria requires better funding, journalist training, government support, and increased investment in media infrastructure. Strengthening community journalism will enhance information dissemination and contribute to sustainable development in rural areas.
