Impact of Parenting Styles on Peer Relationship Among Secondary School Students in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Nigeria.

Abstract
This study examined the relationship between impact of parenting style on peer relationship among secondary school students in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Nigeria. To achieve the purpose of this study, four purposes, research questions and hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The descriptive survey design was adopted for this study. The population for this study consists of two thousand, four hundred and three (3,403) senior secondary school II students (male and female) of 2023/2024 academic session in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Nigeria. The simple random sampling technique was used for the selection of 200 respondents. The questionnaire titled “Parenting Style and Peer Relationship Questionnaire (PSPRQ)” was used for data collection. Split half reliability test was used to determine the reliability estimate of the instrument with coefficient ranging from .75 to .92. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while Pearson Product Moment Correlation Analysis was the statistical technique employed to test the hypotheses under study. Each hypothesis was tested at .05 level of significance. The result of the analysis revealed that, authoritative parenting style, authoritarian parenting style, permissive parenting style and neglectful parenting style has a significant positive relationship with students’ peer relationship in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Nigeria. Based on the findings of the study it was recommended among others that parents should adopt parenting style that can provide children the opportunity to learn from their parents and also express their opinions, parents should give their children orientation on the kind of friends they follow, parents should pay attention to their children needs to prevent them from turning to peers for comfort, parents, parents should inculcate societal values and norms in their children to enhance proper peer relationship.
