Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study evaluates the competency and qualifications of chemistry teachers in secondary
schools within Kaduna metropolis, Nigeria. Using a descriptive survey design, data was
collected from chemistry teachers and through structured questionnaires. The study investigates
teachers’ ability to design and use instructional materials, their mastery of subject matter, and
the effectiveness of various teaching methods. Findings reveal a significant relationship between
teachers’ qualifications and their competency in utilizing laboratory apparatus, fostering
interactive learning, and improving student performance. Gender differences in competency were
also observed, with male teachers excelling in laboratory demonstrations and female teachers
adhering more to safety protocols. Recommendations include enhancing teacher training
programs, regular workshops to improve pedagogical skills, and equipping laboratories to foster
hands-on learning. This research underscores the critical role of teacher competency in
improving chemistry education outcomes. The sample is randomly selected from ten (10) Senior
Secondary schools in Kaduna metropolis. The sample size of the study shall be a total of sixteen
(16) teachers (respondents) from the selected secondary schools within the schools with which
the data will be collected for the research work.
