Abstract
This study explores the utilization of information and communication technology (ICT) in the teaching and learning of Economics in selected secondary schools in Sokoto, Nigeria. The primary objective is to assess the extent of ICT integration, its effectiveness in enhancing educational outcomes, and the challenges faced by both teachers and students in implementing these tools. Using a descriptive survey research design, data were collected from 110 Senior Secondary 3 students through structured questionnaires. The analysis employed both descriptive and inferential statistics to interpret the findings. Results indicate that while ICT tools such as computers, projectors, and online resources are present in some schools, their usage is limited by several constraints. Key challenges identified include insufficient ICT infrastructure, inadequate teacher training, frequent power outages, and limited internet access. Despite these challenges, the study found that ICT positively impacts teaching delivery and student engagement when effectively utilized. ICT was also shown to aid teacher self-learning and professional development, allowing educators to access up-to-date resources and enhance their instructional strategies. The study concludes that although ICT has the potential to transform the teaching and learning of Economics, its current utilization in Sokoto's secondary schools is not fully optimized. Recommendations include investing in ICT infrastructure, providing regular teacher training, and ensuring consistent maintenance of technological tools. By addressing these challenges, the integration of ICT in Economics education can be significantly improved, leading to better educational outcomes and increased student participation.
