Election as a Tool for Democracy and Good Governance in Nigeria: a Study of Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State (2015-2023)

Abstract
This study focused on election as a tool for democracy and good governance in Nigeria using Mabitoli local government area of Imo State
(2015-2023) as the focal point. The study was anchored on structural functional theory. The researcher employed survey research design and questionnaire served as the instrument of data collection. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentage and the hypotheses were tested using chi-square. The study therefore discovered that there is significant role of INEC in enhancing credible election so as to achieve good governance in of Nigeria democracy; there is significant impact of security agencies in achieving credible elections for good governance in of Nigeria democracy; there is significant contribution of the electorates in enhancing credible election for good governance in of Nigeria democracy; and there is significant relationship between the judiciary and credible election for good governance in of Nigeria democracy. It was recommended that security agencies should play their functions positively during elections b) protecting everybody and adhering to their constitutional functions Furthermore, powers and actions should be open to public and judicia review. INEC should be empowered to register new political parties the meet the necessary requirements and also to deregister those that fo below the stipulated requirements. This study concludes that the exte to which INC, security agencies and electorate play their functio positively in election will determine the level of election credibility a democratic sustainability in the Nigeria system.
