Teachers Variables and Senior Secondary School Student Academic Performance in Biology in Obudu Local Government Area in Cross River State, Nigeria.

Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine teachers’ variables and senior secondary
school students’ academic performance in biology in Obudu Local Government
Area of Cross River State. To achieve the purpose of this study, three null
hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The design used for this study is
the Ex-post facto design. The population of this study comprises of Senior
Secondary School two (SS11) Biology students in secondary schools in Obudu
Local Government Area Cross River State totaling 4028. This study adopts
random sampling technique. The sample of the study consists of SS11 biology
students in Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River State and a total of 200
respondents was randomly selected from five secondary schools. This study
involves the use of two instruments (questionnaire and Student Biology
Achievement Test; SBAT). The instruments were given to two research experts in
test and measurement, Faculty of Educational Foundations, University of Calabar
who validated some of the items, then it was given to the researcher’s supervisor
for final scrutiny. The result obtained from the analysis revealed that there is a
significant influence of teachers’ qualification on students’ academic performance
in biology, there is a significant influence teachers’ teaching and student
academic performance in biology, there is a significant relationship between
teachers’ mastery of subject matter and student academic performance in biology
in the study area. In line with the finding of this study and conclusion drawn, the
following recommendation were made, there should be strict monitoring by
inspectors and supervision to ensure that the school environment is made
conducive enough for learning, government should endeavor to engage the
services of qualified teachers in secondary schools and equally ensure regular
payment of their salary, biology teachers should ensure students are given access
to
the available laboratory apparatus, stakeholders of education, non
governmental organization and cross river state government should work towards
enhancing the quality of science laboratories to spur up teachers to actively
engage in teaching, professional bodies like STAN (Science teachers association
of Nigeria), secondary education board should organize conferences, workshops
and seminars for biology teachers.
