Social Media Influence on Female Senior Secondary School Students (a Study of Offa Grammar School Students)

ABSTRACTThe study examines social media influence on female senior secondary school students. Thestudy focused on Offa Grammar School Female Senior Students. The objectives of this studyare to examine the level of addictiveness to social media by Offa Grammar School femalesenior secondary students and to also determine the social media network that the studentsare more exposed to. To achieve this, the descriptive survey research design was adopted.The total population of the study was 1000. Krejcie and Morgan formula was used to get thesample of the population which was 278. 278 questionnaires were printed but 250 were dulyfilled and returned by the respondents. The sampling technique used was systematic samplingtechnique. Distribution of questionnaire was used as research instrument where A four pointLikert Type Rating Scale Questionnaire type, titled:“social media influence on female seniorsecondary school students”was used to collect data from the participants. The tools used inanalyzing the data were tables, frequency and simple percentage method. Research findingsshowed that a great number of female senior secondary students in Offa Grammar School areaddicted to social media. It also revealed Student’s exposure to social media network hassignificant influence on students’academic performance. To this end, the researcherrecommended that Students should be educated on the influence of Social media on theiracademic performance. Teachers should ensure they use the social media as a tool toimprove the academic performance of students in school and Students should be monitoredby teachers and parents on how they use these sites. This is to create a balance betweensocial media and academic activities of students to avoid setbacks in the academicperformance of the students. The researcher suggested for further study that similar studiesshould be conducted in other states of the federation so as to bring about improvement onfemale senior secondary school students through the use of social media networks and tocreate more pages for research and academic activities.
