Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the influence of parents’ educational attainment on the academic performance of children in Alimosho Local Government Area, Lagos State, Nigeria. The research explores both direct and indirect effects of parental education on children's academic success, while also examining other critical factors such as family structure, home environment, parental occupation, and individual resilience. A descriptive survey design was employed, with data collected from a stratified random sample of students using a structured questionnaire. Quantitative analysis was conducted using means, standard deviations, Pearson correlation, and ANOVA. Findings revealed a significant positive correlation between parental education and children’s academic performance. However, the study also highlights the role of non-academic parental attributes, such as emotional support and engagement, in shaping student outcomes. Interestingly, some children from highly educated families performed poorly, while others from low-education backgrounds excelled, emphasizing the multifaceted nature of academic achievement. The study concludes that while parental educational attainment is influential, it is not solely determinative. Recommendations include encouraging parental involvement at all educational levels, strengthening community support systems, and formulating inclusive policies to support academically vulnerable students regardless of parental background.
