Abstract
This project presents the design and construction of an AC/solar rechargeable lantern aimed at providing a cost-effective and energy-efficient lighting solution for both urban and rural areas, especially where electricity supply is unstable or unavailable. The lantern incorporates a dual charging system that enables it to be powered either through solar energy or conventional AC mains. A solar panel is used to harness renewable energy during the day, while an AC adapter allows charging from the grid when solar energy is insufficient. The energy is stored in a rechargeable lithium-ion battery managed by a protection circuit to prevent overcharging, over-discharging, and short-circuiting. The stored energy powers high-efficiency light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which provide bright and reliable illumination. The system was carefully constructed using locally available materials and tested under different conditions to assess its performance and reliability. The results showed that the lantern effectively met the design objectives, offering long-lasting illumination, flexible charging options, and improved energy sustainability. This project serves as a practical solution for bridging the energy gap in under-electrified communities and promotes the use of renewable energy for small-scale applications.
