Self-Esteem and Family Support as Correlate of Emotional Intelligence Among Undergraduate Students of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (coou)

Abstract

The study examined self-esteem and family support as correlate of emotional intelligence among undergraduate students of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU). Specifically, the study examined the relationship between self-esteem and emotional intelligence among undergraduate students of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU). Additionally, it investigated the association between family support and emotional intelligence among these students. The study involved 200 undergraduates from COOU, selected using convenience sampling. Three instruments were utilized: the Family Support Scale by Sikaras (2011) to measure family support, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale by Rosenberg (1997) to measure self-esteem, and the Emotional Intelligence Scale (EIS) by Schutte et al. (1998) to measure emotional intelligence. A correlational design was adopted, and two hypotheses were tested using Pearson's product-moment correlation. The results revealed that both self-esteem and family support significantly correlated with emotional intelligence among the undergraduates. Consequently, both hypotheses were rejected. Based on the findings, it is recommended that the university consider implementing self-esteem enhancement programs to foster higher levels of self-esteem among students.
