Abstract
ABSTRACT
Cultism is a significant issue in Nigerian universities, with roots tracing back to the 1950s,where initially non-violent student groups evolved into harmful secret cults. In Ekiti State University,cuilt-related violence has impacted student behavior, academic performance, and campus safety. This study examines the factors driving cultism, such as peer pressure and socioeconomic background, and its effects on students. Insights gained aim to inform policy and interventions to mitigate cultism's adverse effects on higher education.Cultism remains a persistent issue at Ekiti State University, affecting student behavior, academic performance,and campus safety. This study seeks to examine its impact and provide insights for effective,evidence-based interventions to address the problem.This study examines the prevalence, causes, and impacts of cultism on student behavior and academic performance at Ekiti State University. It aims to provide insights and recommendations for effective interventions through a comprehensive analysis involving various university departments.This study uses a descriptive survey design to examine how cultism and student behavior affect academic performance at Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti. A structured questionnaire and university records provide data, while stratified and random sampling ensure representativeness. Analysis is conducted using SPSS for both descriptive and inferential statistics to offer insights and recommendations.The study concludes that cultism negatively impacts student behavior and academic performance at Ekiti State University, despite existing interventions. Strengthening orientation,security, counseling, and collaboration with parents and security agencies are essential to reducing cult influence. It also recommends economic support programs and strict enforcement of anti-cultism policies to create a safer academic environment.
