Abstract
This research explores the sociolinguistic dynamics of slangs used within the LGBTQ+ community in Calabar, Nigeria. Through a mixed-method approach combining surveys, semi-structured interviews, questionnaire and focus groups, this study examines the role of slang in constructing and negotiating identity and belonging among LGBTQ+ individuals in Calabar. The analysis reveals a complex interplay between language, culture, and sexuality, as participants employ slang to subvert heteronormative norms, create inclusive spaces, and perform queer identities. This research identifies a unique slang lexicon that reflects the community's experiences, resistances, and desires. The findings contribute to the understanding of language and sexuality, highlighting the agency and creativity of LGBTQ+ individuals in shaping their linguistic and social realities.
