Abstract
This research focused on the impact of modernity on traditional burial rites in Nkanu west Enugu State Nigeria. the socio-cultural and economic values of traditional burial rites are being eroded by modernity thereby creating conflict of ideas and practices. This study investigated the burial rites of the Nkanu west and the impact modernity has had in those rites of passage. This research used qualitative method, which entails the use of primary data collection of oral interviews as well as secondary data through textbooks, journals and internet sources. This study discovered that modernity has influenced the mode of preparing for burials, dressing the corpse and even our means of participating in burials. Modernity has influenced the expenditure in burials that is supposed to be seamless according to traditional requirements. This study therefore recommends that modernity be put aside and the traditional rites that were handed to us by tradition be taken-up to lesser high expenditure in burials.
