Abstract
The objective of this research is to determine the qualitative screening of phytochemical analysis of Spondias mombin fruit extracts using ethanol as the solvent. The fruits of Spondias mombin plant were harvested during the afternoon into a polythene bag at Oranyan Grammer School, Oyo town of Oyo State Nigeria. The Phytochemical screening took place at the Central laboratory located in the University of Lagos. Phytochemical screening of Spondias mombin fruit extract was carried out using the method of Sofowora. Results of the qualitative phytochemical screening showed that tannin, flavonoid and saponin were present while alkaloid and cardiac glycoside were absent in the fruit extract. In conclusion, it can be deduced from this research that Spondias mombin is a medicinal plant that is rich in secondary metabolites which include flavonoid, saponin and tannin which have been contributing to various biological activities of the Spondias mombin plants all across the globe and this have been widely used in the drug developmement and pharmaceutical industries.
