Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the impact of sustainable design strategies in the
built environment, with a specific focus on the Abubakar Rasheed Senate Building
located at Bayero University’s main campus in Kano, Nigeria. The research
explores the principles of sustainability and sustainable architecture, emphasizing
the integration of environmental, economic, and social considerations in building
design. Key sustainable strategies such as passive design, energy efficiency, water
conservation, and the use of eco-friendly materials are examined to assess their
effectiveness in enhancing building performance and user well-being. Data was
collected through structured questionnaires administered to a purposively selected
sample of 16 participants, including staff and facility managers familiar with the
building. Quantitative analysis was employed to evaluate perceptions of
sustainability features and their perceived benefits. The findings reveal that the
building incorporates several sustainable elements that contribute to reduced energy
consumption, improved indoor environmental quality, and long-term operational
savings. However, the study also identifies challenges such as limited maintenance
of systems and inadequate user awareness. The research concludes that while the
Abubakar Rasheed Senate Building demonstrates commendable strides in
sustainable design, continuous improvement in implementation, education, and
policy support is necessary to fully realize its potential. The study offers valuable
insights for future sustainable developments in academic institutions and similar
public infrastructure projects.
