Abstract
This study focuses on the modification of a small-scale charcoal-fired crucible furnace for metal melting applications. The aim of this study is to modify a small-scale charcoal-fired crucible furnace in the department of Industrial and Production, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma. The furnace was constructed using locally sourced materials, anthill-clay mixture for refractory lining, and a manually controlled air-blower system to enhance combustion efficiency. Performance tests were conducted to determine the melting capacity, efficiency, and operational effectiveness of the furnace. Results showed that the furnace achieved a melting capacity of 0.0468 kg/min, and an 8-hour operational capacity of 22.46 kg with an efficiency of 84.7%, making it a viable alternative to expensive imported models. The furnace was also found to be cost-effective, easy to operate, and energy-efficient, making it suitable for local metal casting operations.
