Abstract
Abattoir is a place where animals are been slaughtered thereby serving as a sources of meat to the community, moreover, lack of proper hygiene during the course of slaughtering the animal could lead to exposure of meat with pathogenic bacteria. In this research, sample of abattoir effluent was collected from four sources namely, before slaughtering, at slaughter point, middle point and end point and was characterize to obtain the pollution level of the effluent based some selected parameters. The color of the water turns cloudy due to presence of dirty substances. Brownish coloration was observed from the sample obtain from middle point,. Moreover the BOD content skyrocketed to 1788mg/L with PH 36.6 almost been the same with that obtained from slaughter. The result of the BOD content were found to be high 78-2680mg/L whereas temperature, PH was favorable. Different bacterial strain were isolated using serial dilution and streaking method and the result showed that E. Coli and shigella dysentriae were recorded with highest frequency of occurrence of 18.9% followed by salmonella typhi and proteus mirabilis with frequency of 18.8% and the least was streptococcoi pneumonia with frequency of 4.54% respectively.
