Abstract
The relentless rise of China and the consolidation of the BRICS alliance (Brazil, Russia, India,
China, and South Africa) have precipitated a paradigmatic shift in the global power dynamics.
As China's economic and military prowess continues to grow, it poses a formidable challenge
to Western hegemony. This paper argues that China's ascendancy and the BRICS alliance serve
as a countervailing force to Western dominance, fostering a multipolar world order. Through a
critical analysis of the existing literature and empirical data, this research elucidates the
exigency of China's rising influence and the BRICS alliance in promoting global governance,
economic cooperation, and geopolitical equilibrium. Thus, this study examines the following
research questions: Has China’s rising influence impacted the development of BRICS member
states within the period under study? Has the economic and security cooperation of BRICS
nation implicated the topple of western hegemony. The paper adopts the time series research
design, documentary method of data collection and content analysis method of data analysis.
The study is anchored on the neo-realist theory as a theoretical framework of analysis. The rise
of BRICS countries, particularly China, may lead to tensions with established powers,
potentially resulting in conflict. The aim of BRICS+ is to bring to realization the need for an
equitable world order, where other countries not only U.S will also be at the helm of affairs, and
one way it could be done is the agenda of “de-dollarization”. For a total and successful topple
of western hegemony to take place, the BRICS nation states are supposed to engage and liaise
on smooth and stable ways in which they can introduce a BRICS payment system, which they
can trade amongst themselves in the world without involving the U.S dollar. The study
concludes that the BRICS alliance, underpinned by China's growing clout, has the potential to
reshape the global landscape, ensuring a more equitable and pluralistic world order.
