Evaluation of the Psycho-Social Impact of School Based Violence and Academic Performance in Public Secondary Schools in Owerri Municipal Council of Imo State

Abstract
Abstract The research study was conducted to evaluate psychosocial impacts of school-based violence in Public Secondary School in Owerri Municipal, Imo State. This study was carried out using descriptive research design. The area of the study was specifically Owerri in Municipal which comprises of ten public Secondary Schools. A Population sample size of 400 respondents was randomly selected. The instruments used for data collection was a four likert-Scale questionnaire which was administered by the researcher. The findings revealed that the types of violence in public secondary schools in Owerri includes unwanted touching, threats and sexual harassment. The researcher concluded that violence in public secondary schools are mostly due to exposure to violence in homes and other places and so recommended that counseling services should be made available for students in dealing with causes and effects of school based violence and other related violence that may affect their academic, social and emotional life and future and that clear, safe and accessible channels for reporting and monitoring school based violence are keys to reacting to the act of violence and assisting victims to ensure that their psychological health is protected.
