Abstract
Alzheimer’s disease (memory impairment) disorder is on the increase worldwide. Whetheradministration of ethanol extract of alligator pepper and serotonin precursor (5-Hydroxytryptophan)diets can ameliorate memory impairment has not been previously ascertained. Therefore, this research was to study the effects of administration of alligator pepper as well as serotoninprecursor diets in mice. Forty mice were randomlyassigned into 4groups (10 mice per group) namely; Control, alligator pepper only,5-HT plus alligator pepper, and 5-HT only. Preliminary studies onphytochemical analysis were done before learning/memory was also studied. Standardmethods were used to study learning/memory. The results showed that preliminaryphytochemical screening of 5-HT indicated the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, andpolyphenols(antioxidants). Learning was impaired in the Control only group compared toother test groups (p
