Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Standard Precaution Among Health Workers in Medical Units in Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua, Edo-State

Abstract

Standard precautions practices are the minimum infection prevention practices that apply to all patients regardless of suspected or confirmed infection status. This study sought to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of standard precaution among health care workers in medical unit in Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua, Edo- State. The study adopted a non-experimental descriptive design. The target population was 172 health care workers in medical units. The sampling technique employed in the study is to select the 132 sample size was the stratified sampling lechnique. The instrument for data collection was a self-developed questionnaire. 115 respondents participated in the study. Data collected was analyzed using simple descriptive statistical data represented in frequency, tables and percentages. Findings from this study revealed that respondents had a fairly good knowledge of standard precaution, a positive attitude towards standard precaution and a good practice of standard precaution. It was concluded that the level of standard precaution was good among respondents while the attitude was positive and the practice fairly good. It was therefore recommended that staff should be trained and re-trained regularly on standard precaution.
