Abstract
ABSTRACTThis research work is on Antibacterial Activity of Moringa oeifera Leaf extract against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, the objectives of the study are ;determine the phytochemical constituents of Moringa oeifera leaf extracts, isolate and identify Staphylococcus aureus from clinical sample; and determine the antibacterial activity of Moringa oleifera leaf extract against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus using ethanol and aqueous extraction methods. The collected plant extracts was subjected to qualitative phytochemical analysis for identification of various bioactive chemical constituents (alkaloid, saponins, flavonoids, steroid, tannin and Quinones) using standard laboratory methods. The weight of the extract obtained was (3.00g) for ethanol and (5.00g) for aqueous from the same initial weight of 100g. The antibacterial activity was evaluated using the disk diffusion method. The zones of inhibition was also observed to be higher in ethanol extract (21mm) compared to aqueous extract (19mm). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of ethanol and aqueous extracts were determined. The results showed that the ethanol extract had a lower MIC value (25mg/mL) compared to the aqueous extract (50mg/mL). The MBC values for both extracts were 100mg/mL. The findings of this study suggest that Moringa oleifera leaf extracts possess antibacterial activity against S. aureus, with the ethanol extract being more potent. These results support the potential use of M. oleifera as a natural remedy against bacterial infections.
